Today is International Women's Day, we celebrate the achievements of women and acknowledge the work that still needs to be done to achieve gender equality. However, this year, I would like to take a moment to highlight the importance of the inclusion of trans women.
Transgender individuals, face discrimination and violence every day. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 44 transgender and gender non-conforming people were violently killed in the United States alone, making it the deadliest year on record for trans people. This violence is often fueled by transphobia and ignorance about transgender identities.
We must recognize that trans women are women, and deserve the same rights and opportunities as cisgender women. We cannot claim to fight for gender equality while excluding and marginalizing trans women.
Trans women face many of the same challenges as cisgender women, such as workplace discrimination, lack of access to healthcare, and the gender pay gap. They also face unique challenges, such as transphobic violence and discrimination in accessing gender-affirming healthcare.
In order to be truly inclusive and intersectional, the feminist movement must work to address these issues and advocate for the rights of all women. This means supporting policies that protect transgender individuals from discrimination, promoting education and awareness about transgender identities, and amplifying the voices of trans women within the feminist movement.
On this International Women's Day, let's commit to being inclusive and intersectional in our feminism. Let's work to create a world where all women, regardless of their gender identity, can thrive and reach their full potential.
