Considerations of Pronoun Use

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

I recently have shared my coming out story with multiple organizations. This got me thinking about pronouns, and how those that work with youth can inadvertently out them.

Considerations must be taken to ensure that the safety of those we work with are valued. Do you know if they are comfortable sharing their pronouns? Do they want their pronouns shared?

Here are a a few questions which must be asked:

Can I use your pronouns in front of others?

If I need to contact home; can I use your pronouns in conversation with caregivers and guardians?

Are you comfortable with me sharing your pronouns with my colleagues?

Being an ally requires a lot of time, consideration and energy. Let's move forward in creating safe spaces for those whom we work with. Lead the way, be present and keep your ears open.

A simple action or comment often creates a positive ripple effect to those that surround you.
